If you’re looking for some sunscreen for a trip or just to use for your everyday use, you usually head out to the grocery store or your local drug store. You walk down the aisle and are immediately bombarded with a bunch of big brand sunscreens—and then which to choose? The right answer might be none of them. While it may seem as though the big brands are the ones you can trust for guaranteed skin safety and benefits, the truth is often what you might not expect.   Because, what the big brands don't tell you (or maybe they just forgot J ) is that they are behind the times. There are quite a few ingredients in your “go to” big brand sunscreens that may be causing you and your family harm. The ingredients: Oxybenzone, Retinyl Palmitate, Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), Octyl-Methoxycinnamate (OMC), Homosalate, and 4-methyl-benzylidene camphor (4-MBC) are some of the most prominent ingredients commonly found in sunscreens that are suspect to be detrimental and possibly even dangerous to human health.   Quite frankly, the number of big brand sunscreens, who have yet to take the time and money to remove these ingredients and create a safer product, is atrocious. So, while you’re checking out new sunscreens, take a peek at the ingredient list and look out for these potentially harmful ingredients that are so commonly found in popular sunscreens.   Another thing that the big companies are withholding is that the way they market themselves can be very misleading to the everyday consumer, so listen up! Sunscreens marketed to be over SPF 30 really can really be a waste of your money! After SPF 30, the difference in protection is almost indistinguishable, and they want to charge you so much more money for that maybe one percent gain. Another thing to keep in mind is that SPF only dictates how long the product will protect you in the sun, not the spectrum it covers! Make sure to check for UVA and UVB protection when you’re checking out sunscreen options. UVB rays are what put you at large risk for sunburn, while UVA rays are what largely cause premature aging. Try to find a sunscreen that protects the largest spectrum (UVA and UVB).   So, it is important to learn about the secrets of sunscreens so that you can best find the perfect and safest match for your family! Make sure that it’s protecting you as best as possible on the outside AND on the inside. While sunscreen is key in protecting you from the sun, it’s important to make sure it doesn't contain harmful ingredients that can harm you from the inside.   For skincare that you can trust to be safe and beneficial for the whole family, check out the TruKid products!
