Just like kid's skin, baby skin requires lots of special attention! While a baby's skin is fully developed, it is still the most sensitive and fragile. As a baby's skin matures, it becomes stronger and more resilient. Until then, it is extremely important to take the time to protect and care your baby's skin.
Differences in skin structure contribute to the fragility of baby and child skin as opposed to the durability of adult skin. Made up of different kinds of cells, the epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin. The dermis is the middle layer of the skin and basically consists of connective tissues. The epidermis is 20-30% thinner in babies and children and therefore much less resilient than adult skin. Additionally, the epidermis and the dermis are loosely attached together compared to the tightly sealed epidermis and dermis of an adult -- meaning that their young skin is more susceptible to environmental factors and hydration issues than an adult. Skin is meant to be a barrier between the outside world and the insides of one’s body. Since a child’s skin is thinner and has a higher body surface area, it more easily absorbs toxins; therefore, we recommend that you use natural, safe products for your baby.

Why should I choose truly natural skin care for my baby?
Most baby products on the market contain toxic, unpronounceable ingredients that are not generally safe and healthy for our families. Babies are more susceptible to these chemicals because their brains and bodies are just beginning to develop, and we want to give them the healthiest start possible. We use truly natural and organic ingredients in our products to protect and nourish baby’s hair, skin and body. Why put chemicals on kids…. Or babies?
Are TruBaby products “tear free”?
TruBaby products are naturally tear free, being pH balanced for the eyes. They do not sting -- unlike other products that are actually labeled “tear free”. These products contain an ingredient that numbs the eyes to prevent the baby from feeling the stinging. Ugh. Chemicals to prevent the problems of other chemicals. That’s why TruBaby stays away from chemicals!
When can my baby start using TruBaby sunscreens?
According to the FDA, babies can start using sunscreen at 6 months. Prior to 6 months we recommend keeping your baby indoors as much as possible; however, we know that is not always possible. When outdoors, keep your baby in the shade, use long sleeves and hats to protect baby’s sensitive skin.
What are the benefits of mineral sunscreen for babies?
Mineral sunscreens are great for sensitive skin and babies: mineral UV blockers such as titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide sit on top of the skin, and are less likely to cause skin irritation than chemical UV absorber ingredients, such as Avobenzone. Because they sit on the skin, it is like putting on a shirt, and therefore the sunscreen provides immediate protection, reflecting harmful UV rays immediately upon application. Chemical sunscreens need 20 minutes to absorb into and interact with the skin before they are able to provide protection.
What’s the deal with SPF? How much protection am I getting with SPF 30+?
No sunscreen blocks 100 percent of UV rays, but SPF 15 protects against 93 percent, SPF 30 protects against 97 percent, and SPF 50-60 shut out 98 percent. However, there are potential disadvantages to using higher SPFs. The increase in UVB protection is minimal in SPFs above 50, and SPFs primarily measure UVB protection (despite the importance of UVA which accelerates skin aging and contributes to skin cancer). So, sunscreens with high SPFs may not burn, but without UVA protection, individuals are still vulnerable to larger amounts of skin-damaging radiation. At the same time, most people apply only 0.5 to 1 milligram/square centimeter of skin. So, the actual SPF they are being protected by is 1/3 of the labeled value. For more information
What is the difference between the TruBaby and TruKid sunscreen?
Our vision is to create products suitable for the entire family. We recognize that everyone is in a different phase of life and has different needs and looks for products based on the ages of their children. Parents of babies shop for baby products, and parents of toddlers and up shop for kids’ products. We created two distinct brands that focus on the needs of our customers, and that match our brand’s value and safety requirements. TruBaby products are the same formula as our TruKid products, with our safe and healthy ingredients but packaged just for the newest members of our families.
